SHE DEVIL XI: We Will Survive
Studio Stefania Miscetti is proud to present the eleventh edition of SHE DEVIL, SHE DEVIL XI: We Will Survive. Once again, this year’s collection of video art brings together a vast number of international women curators and artists, from the emerging to the established, providing a genuinely open platform for new and original practices.
The theme of the eleventh edition of the She Devil video art review stretches from the relationship that has always existed between Man and the complex system he inhabits, to the specific features this relationship has acquired in the current geological era.
Among the artworks on show some portray the fascination of the indissoluble bond we share with nature, while others reveal how humanity has taken on the role of executioner, revealing the impact its intensive and indiscriminately exploitative actions have had – and continue to have – from an increase in greenhouse gases to global warming, the destruction of ecosystems to a loss of biodiversity.
This SHE DEVIL edition looks to the future of the planet and the species, revealing a variety of distinct and disparate scenarios: both in the hope that the proactive visions will materialise, but also that even the darkest expectations may stimulate clear, decisive action now, in the present.
The godmather of SHE DEVIL XI is the Italian artist Laura Grisi (Rodi, 1939–Rome, 2017), with her 1968 piece Wind Speed 40 Knots.
The exhibition catalogue, published by CURA., tells the story of the eleven editions of SHE DEVIL and will be presented at the finissage.
SHE DEVIL is the name of a heroine in the Marvel Comics universe, Shanna the She Devil, and title of the famous film from 1989 by Susan Seidelman. In this circumstance it alludes in a playful way to the diabolical and bizarre spirit with which artistic experience investigates day-to-day life. In continuity with the previous editions of the She Devil series, the videos represent women’s viewpoints and place the various fields of video art research in direct contrast to one another. The purpose of the initiative is to stress, at times using irony, at times realism, the collective consciousness on themes such as female identity, the body as repository of representation and meaning, and personal experiences on universal dimensions, even when the very intimacy of the artists is at the forefront of their works.
SHE DEVIL was born in 2006 from an idea of Stefania Miscetti, and involves artists and curators, both Italian and international, from emerging young talents to highly acclaimed personalities. The various works and different critical perspectives coexist within a discourse of many voices, in which the multiplicity of feminine worlds and visions emerges.
The first two editions, SHE DEVIL in 2006 and SHE DEVIL 2 in 2007, featured respectively 4 and 6 curatorsm and the same number of artists, Since the third edition of SHE DEVIL in 2009, SHE DEVIL 3, Stefania Miscetti decided to get more curators involved. The success of the initiative was confirmed that year by a special international edition of SHE DEVIL at MNAC, the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest, Romania.
In 2010, after new SHE DEVIL 4 edition of the project, SHE DEVIL has been selected for the show The Madness of Art at the Ravello Festival. The fifth edition of the project, SHE DEVIL 5, took place in the summer of 2011 at MACRO, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome. In 2014, the sixth edition SHE DEVIL 6 received extensive media coverage. In 2015, the seventh edition SHE DEVIL 7 was organized in Rome, while the SHE DEVIL On Tour special project was showcased at Palazzo Primavera (Terni, Italy) and at Golden Thread Gallery (Belfast UK).
2016 saw both the eighth edition SHE DEVIL 8: In The Mirror and the special edition SHE DEVIL. Leipziger Edition: Home (Galerie KUB). In 2017, SHE DEVIL landed in Lithuania at the National Gallery of Art in Vilnius, while the ninth edition of the video art review, SHE DEVIL 9: Today, took place at Studio Stefania Miscetti in Roma. In 2018, the tenth edition, SHE DEVIL X: Resisters was presented again at the Studio gallery, while selected video artists and curators presented SHE DEVIL Remix at the National Institute of Graphics (Rome), and at the Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci (Prato).
