about.

STUDIO STEFANIA MISCETTI is proud to present CORNICI D’OMBRE, a solo exhibition of work by ALESSANDRO GENESI.

The exhibition features 14 photographic works from the 1980s onwards, made with both analogue and digital technology. It includes nine unseen photographs from the eponymous series conceived between 2008 and 2024; the piece Fasti barocchi, from 1991; and four photographs from the 1988 series Il calice di Rubin.

The journey through the exhibition draws life from a vast corpus of images, its at once concise and essential outlook reflecting on a number of works by the artist that make the “shadow” (l’ombra) their own, whether physically or conceptually – as field of enquiry, theme and visual tool.

This practice has its roots in 1980s analogue photography, in which the reconstruction of images in a darkroom led to a theoretical querying of the structure of shadows, the human figure, its perception and reality, through a comparison with architecture.
These aspects are further developed in the monumental features of the
Fasti barocchi. Here, thanks to an upending of the central and the peripheral, the human figure moves into the background, allowing rhythm and structure – but above all the frame itself – to take centre stage. Thus, in its enclosing of empty space, the frame serves as both content and container.
Finally, in the most recent works the relationship between frame and figure is reinvigorated by the (albeit elusive) presence of the artist, as he adopts the dual role of protagonist and performer, actor and creator.

By way of these conceptual operations, Alessandro Genesi sheds light on natural, architectural and visual elements of everyday life, reimbuing them with their value as signs. The use of composition and reiteration enables him to give life to unprecedented spatial dimensions and symbolic imaginations.
