MICHELE OKA DONER was born in Miami but currently lives and works in New York. For more than thirty years she has been traveling around the world of American and international art, rejecting labels and systems.

In artist’s presence, her last two books will be presented:

Natural Seduction, published in 2003 by Hudson Hills Press, with an introduction by Mitchell Wolfson Jr,. and Workbook, published by Oka. 2004 press.
Natural Seduction documents the multi-faceted path of the artist’s production, from installations in public places to sculptures, furniture, jewelry. Many of these works are housed in museum collections, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York  and The Art Institute of Chicago.

Workbook is a limited edition book of blueprints which document elements of installations that Oka Doner designed from 1990 to 2003, including the famous The Walk on the Beach created inside the airport of Miami, where three thousand bronze pieces, each original work by the artist, are immersed in three thousand square meters of Venetian style marble. The cover of each volume of Workbook is a unique work, handmade by Oka Doner with the technique of “Dykem spray”

Nature and past, anthropology and archeology are the primary elements and tools that the artist uses for the formulation of her very personal vocabulary of natural forms (such as organic fragments, ditches, shells and corals) which she reinvents in the constructive modules of her works.

The sculptress, who often defines herself as “one who works the materials”, during her long career has expressed herself through different techniques and materials: from the terracotta sculptures of the 60s evoking the forms of the Mediterranean fertile deities, to the series of clay installations of the 70s, up to the most recent production of almost exclusively bronze castings.

Among the works created specifically for public spaces, in addition to the mentioned The Walk on the Beach, we mention: the installation Celestial Plaza in the Hayden Planetarium in New York; the Radiant Site installation composed of 11,000 golden tiles in the renovated subway station, in Herald Square in New York.
