SELECTED BIOGRAPHY

Born May 30th 1947 in Saint-Etienne, France. Lives and works between Paris, New York and Los Angeles.

ORLAN is a permanent teacher at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Paris-Cergy. She is regularly invited by universities and institutions to give lectures and master-classes.
She explores different techniques such as photography, video, sculpture, installation, performance, biotechnologies etc.

SELECTED EXHIBITIONS

1964 ORLAN produced a series of photographs called Corps-Sculptures, like "ORLAN accouche d’elle-m’aime".

1967 ORLAN started a series of Tableaux vivants (“Living pictures”).

1977 Her performance Le Baiser de l'Artiste (The Artist’s Kiss) during FIAC art fair (International Contemporary Art Fair of Paris) made a huge scandal and had a great success.
From 1978 to 1982 she organized the International Symposium of Performance in Lyon.

1979 ORLAN participated to the International Meetings of Performance at the Palazzo Grassi, curator Jorge Glusberg, Venice, Italy.

1982 She founded the first online magazine of contemporary art, Art-Accès-Revue, on France’s precursor to the Internet: the Minitel.

1989 ORLAN wrote the Carnal Art manifesto, and from 1990 to 1993 she conducted a series of 9 surgery operations-performances, called Images, New Images and The Reincarnation of Saint-ORLAN, filmed and broadcasted in institutions throughout the world, among which the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Sandra Gering Gallery in New York, the Centre MacLuhan in Toronto...

1999 ORLAN was awarded the Arcimboldo Prize of Digital Photography by Hewlett Packard France, the First Prize at Griffel-Kunst in Hamburg, and the First Prize of the Festival of Photography in Moscow.

2003 The Minister of Culture Jean-Jacques Aillagon conferred her with the honorary title of Chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

2005 ORLAN had an exhibition at the Miro Foundation in Barcelona and at the Kunsthalle in Vienna. She was granted a year of residence at ISCP in New York, by the AFAA (now called Cultures France).

2006-2007 She was invited as a scholar in residence at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, where she taught at the Art College of Design. Her piece The Artist’s Kiss was presented in the exhibition Wack! Art and the Feminist Revolution at the MOCA, Los Angeles, which then traveled to the National Museum of Women in Arts (Washington D.C.), P.S.1 in New York, Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada, Kunst-Museum Ahlen, Germany, and to the Museo de Bellas Artes of Bilbao, Spain.

2008 ORLAN dressed the “Louis Ghost” chairs designed by Phillipe Stark. She also worked on the recycling of her garde-robe with fashion designers Agatha Ruiz de la Prada and Davidelfin for the exhibition SUTURE-HYBRIDIZATION-RECYCLING at the Espacio AV (Murcia, Spain), curator Isabel Tejeda.
ORLAN was given the title of “Golden Woman” by the magazine “Connaissance des Arts”.

2009 ORLAN’s work has been exhibited in major exhibitions :
elles@centrepompidou at MNAM/Centre Pompidou, curated by Camille Morineau and Emma Lavigne;
La Force de l’Art, curated by Jean-Louis Froment, Jean-Yves Jouannais and Didier Ottinger, in the section “Visiting Artists” (along with Daniel Buren, Gérard Collin-Thiébaut, Bertrand Lavier, Annette Messager, Pierre & Gilles);
and GLASSTRESS at the Palazzo Franchetti in Venice, Italy, curated by Laura Mattioli Rossi and Francesca Giubile, as part of the 53rd Biennale of Venice.
