HERMANN NITSCH

1938 born in Vienna

1948–1956
After leaving school he attends the „School of Graphical Design and
Photography“ in Vienna and starts to develop a keen interest in literature, art
and philosophy

1957
Upon graduation he takes up a post as assistant at the Technical Museum in
Vienna. Several years later, he does his first Malaktion (painting
Performance). Develops the idea of the Orgien Mysterien Theaters, a festival
for six days. The O.M.-Theater is a new form of a complete artwork. Real
events are being staged. All five senses the participants are claimed.

1960–66
Aktionen (action performances) and exhibitions in Vienna, which result
in several court trials and three prison terms

1966
The Destruction in Art Symposium (DIAS), London, Performance of the 20th
Action

1967
Hermann Nitsch leaves Austria for some long stays in America, then he
settles at the country side near Munich

1968
Cinematheque, New York, Performance of the 25th and 26th Action;
University of Cincinnati, 28th Action
Marriage with Beate König

1971
Acquisition of Prinzendorf Palace

1972
Participates at the documenta 5, Kassel;
first 12-hour-action (40th Action) at the Mercer Art Center in New York

1974
The 24-hour 50th Aktion (1 day and 1 night of the 6 Day Play) is performed
in Prinzendorf

1982
Participates at the documenta 7, Kassel

1984
The 72-hours 80th Aktion (three days and nights of the 6 Day Play) is
performed in Prinzendorf

1987
20th Malaktion (painting performance) at the Wiener Secession

1988
Marriage with Rita Leitenbor

1988–2003
Hermann Nitsch teaches a class of interdisciplinary art at the Frankfurt
Academy of Fine Arts (Städel-Schule)

From 1989 Hermann Nitsch repeatedly teaches a painting class at the Salzburger Sommerakademie
